If gambling has stopped being a game, stop reading the rest of this page and talk to someone. Free, confidential help in Ireland: Problem Gambling Ireland and Gambling Care. In the UK: GamCare and GambleAware. All four are free, and none of them are run by gambling companies.
Gambling is a paid entertainment. The price is the money that does not come back, and the only version of it that works is one where losing the price changes nothing about your week. Everything below is about noticing when that stops being true.
Signs worth taking seriously
- Betting more than you decided to, or for longer than you decided to, most times you play.
- Going back to win back — chasing a loss with a bigger stake, the same day.
- Gambling with money that has a job already: rent, bills, food, a repayment.
- Borrowing to gamble, or selling something to gamble.
- Hiding it. Deleting the app before someone sees the phone, lying about the amount.
- Restlessness or irritability when you try to stop, or a day that feels wrong until you have played.
- Gambling to change a mood rather than to be entertained — after an argument, after bad news, when you cannot sleep.
One of these is worth a conversation. Several is worth a call to one of the services above, today. None of them requires you to describe yourself as an addict to get help.
The tools an operator should give you
Every one of these belongs in the account menu, not buried in a help centre. Check the fifth doorstep test on any site before you deposit — how many clicks away these are says a lot about who you are dealing with.
| Tool | What it does | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | Caps what you can put in per day, week or month | A reduction should apply at once; an increase should not |
| Loss limit | Caps net losses over a period | Harder to fool yourself with than a deposit cap |
| Session reminder | Interrupts play with elapsed time and net position | Set it short. The point is the interruption |
| Time-out | Locks the account for 24 hours up to about six weeks | Instant, no explanation owed to anyone |
| Self-exclusion | Closes access for six months or longer | Cannot be reversed on a whim; that is the feature |
| Blocking software | Blocks gambling sites at device level | Works across every operator at once, not one at a time |
Self-exclusion in Ireland and the UK
The UK has a single national scheme, GAMSTOP, which covers every operator licensed by the Gambling Commission — one registration, all sites. Ireland does not have an equivalent national register in force yet. The Gambling Regulation Act 2024 provides for one, and the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland is building the licensing regime in stages, so until it is running, self-exclusion in Ireland is per operator: you have to do it site by site, and device-level blocking software is the only thing that covers everything at once.
Protecting someone else
If this is about a person rather than yourself, both Irish services above support family members directly, and neither requires the gambler to agree to anything first. Practical steps that help: device-level blocking, separating access to shared money, and asking for the conversation to happen away from a screen.
Under 18
Nothing on this site is for you, no legal operator will take your money, and every one of them is required to verify age before a withdrawal — which is where fake accounts get discovered and balances get voided. Come back when you are eighteen, and read how we test first.
